According to the Brandon Hall Group, only 9% of organizations provide clear career paths for their employees. At the same time, employees have anytime access to content and learning experiences without the confines of their training teams. But if learning is happening outside the purview of L&D, how can we support employee development accurately without knowing what skills are present, or not? This is a challenge that combined with the demands of projects and business priorities can be a large task for the L&D function.
With a greater need for collaboration across the business, especially HR, Talent, and L&D, this session will look at how a skills-focused learning approach will ensure organizations remain competitive this year, and into the future.
Degreed's Chief Experience Officer Kat Kennedy discusses why leadership is focused on skill-building and how to close skills gaps in organizations. Then listen in as Jenn Reid, Grant Thornton's Director of Learning & Development, David Woeller, TD Bank's Senior Manager of Learning Technology and Andrew Barrett, Shopify's Learning Platform Lead, share stories of transformation and learning strategy at their innovative organizations.
Jenn Reid is the Director of Learning and Development at Grant Thornton. You know those big cities that still feel like small towns? Where everyone’s friendly and helps each other out? That’s like Grant Thornton. It’s a very different kind of professional services firm where culture is at the heart of who they are and what they do. And Jenn has the exciting role of working to revitalize the firm-wide Learning & Development function there. She’s building a future-focused learning culture to help her colleagues thrive in a changing, dynamic profession.
How did Jenn get to Grant Thornton? Well, it started with a degree in Library and Information Management (yes, she’s a librarian!), followed by some fantastic experiences in one of the top 5 law firms in Canada, and then as a consultant for a dynamic learning & change management vendor. From there, she became a member of the senior leadership team at BMO’s Institute for Learning, before trading in her BMO blue for Grant Thornton purple. Jenn has also been very involved with the Institute for Performance and Learning throughout her career, first leading the Toronto Chapter, and now as a member of the Board of Directors. And when she’s not working or volunteering, you’ll find her on the ski hill, paddle boarding at the cottage, or playing with her two nieces and her goofy dog.
Andrew Barrett, PhD, explores how well designed learning tech can unlock better learning. He is the Learning Platform Lead at Shopify in Ottawa, Canada and an e-assessment focused EdTech scholar. Andrew has been helping universities, Fortune 500 companies, and nonprofits develop effective EdTech and IT solutions since the 1990s.
David Woeller has been with TD Bank for 15 years. His first half of his career was spent in sales and management roles and the second half is spent supporting Enterprise Learning & Development as a facilitator, evaluation & measurement, strategic initiatives, learning design and now leading the Emerging Learning Technology team. His current team focused on continuously enhancing the TD learner experience by exploring both new learning technology vendors as well as looking into tighter integrations across HR and learning platforms. Outside of work, he has 3 young boys to keep him busy with hockey, soccer, piano, and skiing.
